Costa Rica Evolves: Transition to Alphanumeric Legal Entity ID

The Registro Nacional de Costa Rica has announced an important change in the identification of legal entities: due to the exhaustion of the current numeric sequence, a new alphanumeric legal entity ID format will be implemented.

This update responds to the need to modernize the system and ensure continuity in the assignment of legal identifiers in the country.

What does the change involve?

Currently, the legal entity ID uses a numeric format with a sequence of up to 6 digits.

With this update:

• The sequence will become alphanumeric
• The current structure of the identifier will be maintained
• The field length (up to 6 characters) will remain the same

Example of the new format: 3-101-A00001

When will it take effect?

Although the official date has not yet been confirmed, implementation is expected at the beginning of Q4 2026.

The final announcement will be communicated at least two months in advance, allowing companies to prepare accordingly.

Who will be impacted?

• Existing companies

No action is required.
Current IDs will remain valid and active.

• New companies

As of the effective date, they will automatically receive the new alphanumeric format for their legal entity ID.
